Embraer Livery Design

Over the Clouds of Wonders
As part of a regional design competition, this project challenged me to create a special livery for Scoot’s new Embraer aircraft, which will fly across Southeast Asia. Since Scoot is a low-cost airline, my concept aimed to reflect the idea that travel should be accessible to everyone, regardless of background, age, or gender. The illustration visualizes how far dreams can take you, celebrating the freedom to explore and the shared spirit of Southeast Asia
The Brief
Design a full-body aircraft livery that visually represents the identity of Southeast Asia. The design should capture the region’s culture, vibrancy, and energy while aligning with Scoot’s adventurous and youthful tone. The illustration needed to feel bold, dynamic, and meaningful, encouraging travelers to explore the region

Cultural Common Ground
When I first received the brief, I asked myself: What unites all Southeast Asian countries? That question led me to the dragon, a mythical creature found in various SEA cultures, often associated with flight, strength, and tradition. I combined elements of regional dragon iconography and illustrated it soaring across iconic landmarks, accompanied by traditional transport and animals native to the region. The aim was to visually communicate a shared cultural energy and the freedom of travel, accessible to all

Shifting the Approach
During early feedback, I encountered two key challenges. First, the aircraft’s wings would block parts of the illustration, so I adjusted the layout, blending landmarks into Scoot’s signature yellow to let the characters remain visible and vibrant. Second, I was advised to remove mystical and water elements due to aviation taboos. This led me to pivot the concept, replacing the dragon with real birds and leaning into cultural symbols that felt equally meaningful but more grounded

Weaving Identity through Batik
To reflect the region’s cultural richness, I incorporated batik, a traditional art form found across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Inspired by Batik Megamendung from my parents’ hometown, I mimicked its flowing cloud motifs to shape the sky
Character Explorations
To represent flight in a culturally meaningful way, I explored three symbolic forms: birds, fireflies, and butterflies. While all are common in Southeast Asia, fireflies lacked distinct visual variety, so I focused on birds and butterflies. Birds became the lead choice, with each one based on a native species from different SEA countries, turning them into subtle cultural ambassadors.
I also added human figures representing diverse backgrounds, ages, and genders to reinforce the message that everyone, no matter who they are, can fly, dream, and explore with Scoot

"Now, everyone can fly as far as their dreams will take them"
